audrey hepburn style

i had a great client today! he came in and asked to smell the “audrey hepburn fragrance”. i showed him “spring flower” by creed, of course, which he ended up getting. (basenotes link)

i found it refreshing to find out that he and his wife are big fans of audrey, to the point where she wears ferragamo ballerina shoes and givenchy dresses, and he took her on a roman holiday precisely at the hotel the actress stayed.

I honestly doubt Audrey actually wore this, but still, the story lives on. She was more of a Narciso Rodriguez kind of girl - pretty, intimate, skin-like smell. Too bad that one came much later…

Well, as far as I know from a while back, Audrey commissioned the house of Creed to create a fragrance for her. Which they did. They kept the fragrance in the line, but I’m not sure how they did it: if they had her approval or not.
Good question, however; I just wrote to “my people” and I’ll let you know what the official answer is.

Quite tough to find out if she actually wore it, comissioned or not… BTW, should - say - Hillary Clinton walk into your store tomorrow, what scent would you reccomend her?

Carthusia… either Aria di Capri or Fiori di Capri would be my choice.
Liviu recommends Mandragore by Annick Goutal and Love in White by Creed.
Yvonne says Grand Amour by Annick Goutal or Narcotic Venus by Nasomatto.

But we all three agree on No.1 by Clive Christian for night time. :)

Thanks so much for the question!

I agree with the Mandragore suggestion, and I really don’t get the Narcotic Venus one :)
    Thanks for all the answers!

Let’s just say I’d “award” Mr Obama with SL Chergui (which is saying a lot), or CdG (the original), or even Gucci pour Homme. Which brings me to another curiosity. Do you still have “mainstream” preferences?

  8. Comment by Madeleine on March 10, 2008 5:06 pm

*no idea about Chergui; i missed it…
*of course i still smell “mainstreams”, but i really don’t remember the last time i actually paid for a fragrance from that realm.
i will always love Angel and Narciso Rodriguez, Gucci Rush II, Bulgari Green Tea.
for men, i like l’instant de guerlain and grey flannel by geoffrey beene.
    *you must meet Octavian!

Oh, Chergui is one of the most unusual/subtle SL scents. Sandalwood, iris, amber, honey - in this order, to my nose. Ethereal, metallic and airy, but with a certain tactile virtue at the same time. You mus try this.
I adore NR, it’s simplicity done well. I also love Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue. Mitsouko and Shalimar, for that matter. And the Chanels from the Rue Cambon line. But the latest mainstream scents I actually liked are Prada and Dior Homme, and that’s a few years back. Can’t believe the rubbish most of them come out with these days (years, decades…). Identical rubbish throughout the brands, no less…

we have similar tastes. have you ever tried “iris poudre” by pierre bourdon (frederic malle)?

if you did, then i’d be very surprised if you didn’t like it. if you haven’t, let me know when you come the store and i’ll bring it in so you can smell it.

I haven’t got to trying any (I think) of the FMs. By the way, how about FM for your store? They do sound divine, many of them. As do the MPG scents (of these I’ve tried a few, not half bad)…

  12. Comment by Madeleine on March 12, 2008 4:33 pm

Yup… FM is on my list. MPG i know but haven’t tried; they were on my initial list, however, but I think Octavian advised against (haha…i’m not really sure about it as i’m writing this, so he could be very upset, but that’s my honest impression). one reason why i would think twice is also the fact that there are sooooooooo many fragrances and Madison is not that big, yet. i already have a huge lineup of Creed and AG, so another line the size of a squad would be a challenge.

for the second location, though, the sky is the limit! :)

That’s good to hear. MPGs are of great quality and truly interesting (and they do a mean datura scent…). I really think they would deserve a place in your lineup, some of them are great.
I’ve recently heard on makeupalley.com of a US (Seattle, I think ) based line - Antica Farmacista. They make some truly majestic and ambitious sounding florals (such as a magnolia-mimosa-orchid combination, or an orange blossom-lilac-jasmine one, which appeals greatly to the white flower lover in me). But obviously I’ve not tried them in real life, have you?
PS. What’s a nice white flower scent you have? I might get AG Neroli, but it’s a bit too “green”, I’m looking for something more airy/delicate (think L’Artisan’s La Chasse aux Papillons). Thanks!

I love Antica Farmacista and am very familiar with it. The name is misleading, though; it’s an American brand. Their fragrances haven’t hit my spot (they remind me of Lorenzo Villoresi, which I don’t care for). I especially like their home collection, but were I toget something from The States, I would have gotten Agraria. And, to be honest, getting something from the US is hard enough, so I just limit myself to Ineke San Francisco.

White flowers? What else but “Love in White” by Creed?!
